Unfortunately the current points system can be confusing and complicated. The World Ranking is the simplest yet it isn't used for entries and seedings at events making it quite meaningless. Instead separate Entry and Seeding points and Technical points are used. Below is a simplified explanation of these point systems and how they are used currently.
Entry Points are the points earned at the best three of the last four tournaments within the last 365 day period and are calculated at 28 days prior to the start of an event.
Seeding Points are the points earned at the best three of the last four tournaments within the last 365-days period and are calculated at 1 day prior to the start of an event. (except for Elite 16s which are 28 days prior)
Entry Technical Points are the sum of ranking points earned over a 365 day period from the date the ranking points are awarded and are calculated at 28 days prior to the start of an event.
Seeding Technical Points are the sum of ranking points earned over a 365-day period from the date the ranking points are awarded and are calculated at 1 day prior to the start of an event.
The ranking points obtained at other FIVB sanctioned events will be counted only if they improve the athlete’s standing. (i.e. national/continental tours etc.)(includes Host country teams playing in Futures)
Entry and Seeding Points for a team are the sum of the points of the two athletes that compose the team.
Should there be a tie on the Entry points and/or Seeding Points, the following options will be applied to break the tie:
Firstly using the athlete Technical Points.
If the tie still exists a drawing of lots will be conducted.
World Ranking Points are the sum of the points earned from the eight best performances as a team in all
FIVB sanctioned tournaments over a 365 day period. The World Ranking is updated every Monday after an FIVB sanctioned tournament granting ranking points.
